Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve - Emerging Nepal

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

One of the best sites for bird watching in Nepal, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is also noted for being the smallest National Park in Terai. This Park expands over 175sq km of an area covering the wet land, reed beds and forests in Udayapur, Sunsari and Saptari districts. It is the only remaining dwelling place for endangered arna. Established in 1976 with an aim to conserve phanta (plain land) and tappu (small islands) of Koshi River, this Reserve provides shelter to more than 493 species of birds including rare species like Sarus crane, swamp francolin and Bengal florican. Birds migrate from as far as Siberia and Tibet and stay in the Ramsar site from November to February during winter.

Do not expect to see large beasts like rhinoceros and tigers but you can get the rare views of Gangetic dolphins, deer, herons, egrets, ibish, marsh muggers, mongooses, porcupines, blue bulls, golden jackals, fishing cats, civet cats, spotted deer, blue bell, Gharial crocodile and many more. Glimpse of Gangetic dolphin and arna are major highlights in Koshi Tappu Reserve. Dolphins can be best viewed from the bridge at Koshi Barrage. Other activities involve rafting in Saptakoshi River, elephant back safari, canoe ride and jungle walk.
